The Same as Before, Only More

From February through July, I was in Madrid for the selection of our new Patriarch, in Paris for his installation, at 3SI: The River, and finally in San Clemente for the Patriarch’s Council. I have borrowed a phrase from Bishop Jason Epps to describe each of them, because I have not found better: “It’s the same as before, only more.” Every one of those gatherings was recognizably the life of the Church I already knew. Every one of them was more of it.

At each I was, for the most part, an observer and a supporter. The proper word is witness. And what I have witnessed across these five months is not four separate events but one continuous movement, each gathering preparing the ground for the next.
